Not surprisingly, research consistently shows that the quality of the relationship between the therapist and client is one of the primary predictors of client progress in counselling. A referral from a professional or friend can be helpful, but no therapist, no matter how skilled and likeable they are, can have success with every client they encounter.
When it comes to the effectiveness of any therapy, the most important factor is the relationship between you and your counsellor. Choosing a therapist who feels like the right fit for you is a crucial first step toward the change you want to make.
Therefore, it is important for both the client and therapist to determine whether this goodness-of-fit is present and to act accordingly if it is not. Occasionally people need to contact a few health professionals to find the services they need, don't give up!
